Radiosonde Fly-By

This morning I got to see a radiosonde under parachute from my backyard! It landed 1.5 miles from here making it the third radiosonde to land within that distance from my home.

It lifted off around 7:00am Eastern from the NWS Birmingham office at the Shelby County Airport. It rose to a height of 110,920 feet (33,808 meters) before the balloon burst over the Tallapoosa River northeast of Alexander City. It then floated down under parachute for the next 1 hour and 45 minutes before landing in Cataula.

Track from Sondehub.org

The photo at the top of the page and the video below were taken as the radiosonde drifted 0.4 miles west of my backyard at an altitude of 3,500 feet. It would take it 8 minutes from here to descend to the ground 1.5 miles away.
