It’s Doomsday!

Yesterday evening a USAF E-4B “Nightwatch”, aka the doomsday plane, flew over the southern part of the county.

Also known as the National Airborne Operations Center, this aircraft serves as a command post for the nation’s military command (President, Secretary of Defense, and Joint Chiefs of Staff). Based on the 747-200 airframe, the E-4B is similar to the VC-25 (Air Force One) but more militarized with a joint service command staff and more advanced communication systems. Only four of these aircraft exist.

This video is a bit dated but provides a good tour inside the E-4B.

According to ADSB the aircraft that flew over yesterday was 73-1677, the same aircraft in the tour video and the same aircraft I photographed in 2007 as it was shooting approaches at Wright-Patterson AFB.

If you look closely at my photos and the flyover video you may notice there have been a couple additions to the airframe since 2007. Two radomes have been added forward and aft of the wings on the centerline of the fuselage.
