Moon-Mars Conjunction

Last night there was a very close conjunction of the Moon and Mars. In astronomy a conjunction is when two celestial objects appear close to each other.

In the video I mention this was an occultation for parts of the United States. An occultation occurs when a celestial object passes behind or is occulted by another celestial object. Although we did not get to witness an occultation tonight, areas south of Phenix City and Columbus will get to see one on 31 January 2023 just before 1:00am. In fact there is a very thin path thru Phenix City and south Columbus where Mars will only be half occulted by the Moon.
