Earlier this evening SpaceX launched a Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral. Onboard was the Cosmo-Skymed Second Generation 2 (CSG-2) satellite from the Italian Space Agency. The launch occurred at 18:11 local (23:11 UTC) which also coincided with the exact moment of sunset.
This was a polar launch which meant the Falcon 9 flew south hugging the east coast of Florida. With the launch occurring 10 minutes after sunset at the Cape it produced a good twilight phenomenon as the Falcon 9 climbed into sunlight.
I wasn’t entirely sure the launch would be visible from Dowdell’s Knob so I was elated to see the contrail rising from the horizon. That elation grew even more when I saw the cold gas thrusters firing after the boost back burn.
